On May 25, the NYU Furman Center launched FloodzoneData.us, an online tool describing the residents and housing stock located in the nation’s floodplains. The map and data downloads provide state, county and Census tract level information. FloodzoneData.us combines housing and population data with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s maps of the 100-year floodplain and the 500 year floodplain. Florida, Texas and California have the largest number of housing units in the 100-year floodplain. The majority of housing units in the combined 100- and 500-year U.S. floodplains are single-family homes and are owner-occupied. Nine percent of all U.S. public housing units are located in the combined 100- and 500-year floodplains, and eight percent of all privately-owned subsidized rental housing units in the U.S. are located in the combined 100- and 500-year floodplains.
