The Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley has published a new brief that explores the rise in rentals of single-family homes. The brief provides insights into both market dynamics and personal circumstances that encourage households to increasingly rent these units. It also offers policy recommendations to provide protection and support for the single-family home rental population, including providing short and long-term financial assistance to single-family renters, such as a renter’s tax credit and lease-to-own models, as well as strategies for implementing policies that would support fair and quality property management specific to this type of housing and renters.
